Moanoghar

Founding Statutes of Moanoghar in 1974

"Moanoghar (" House of the Hill ") is the ultimate symbol of the lifestyle of the Chittagong Hill Tracts people, based on serenity and peace. We dream that all the children in the region know the peace, serenity and tranquility of Moanoghar in their lives. "

Statutes:

Moanoghar is a non-partisan, nonprofit and voluntary social organization based in Rangapani, Rangamati District.
It is duly registered with the Department of Social Welfare (No. Ranga-18 (871) / 80 on 9 December, 1980) and with the Office of NGO Affairs (No. 1637 of 14 April 2001).

History:

Moanoghar was founded in 1974 in Rangapani (Rangamati town in the Chittagong Hill Tracts) by a group of socially engaged Buddhist monks and lay people. Their goals were to provide shelter and education for children in distress and misery, the victims of the construction of the Kaptai hydroelectric dam in the 1960s and the recent liberation war in 1971. But to grasp its mission , some information on socio-economic conditions in CHTs would be relevant.

The construction of the Kaptai hydroelectric dam was a severe blow to the people of the region. Its creation would have overwhelmed a third of all arable land, uprooting thousands of people. As the region is hilly and mountainous, arable land is already scarce.

In addition, restitution agreements for victims have not been properly implemented, so a large majority of them have received very little or no compensation at all. Peoples torn from their homes because of the dam have spread to different parts of the region as displaced populations. Seeing the plight of these people, the chief priest of the Boalkhali Dashabal Rajvihar Temple, opened a foster home in 1963 called Parbatya Chattal Buddha Anath Ashram; he offered shelter, food and education for the victims of the dam. This home is gradually expanding with the help and support of the local community.

In the aftermath of Bangladesh's independence, the situation of the CHTs worsened markedly with the increasing flow of refugees and displaced populations during the nine months of the war of independence.

It was in this context that Moanoghar was founded in 1974 by the alumni of Parbatya Chattal Buddha Anath ashram. In the following years, the situation of the CHTs deteriorated further with the continuation of fighting between the Bangladeshi army and the tribal rebels, the latter defending together the cause of regional self-government for indigenous peoples.

During this period of conflict that left thousands of victims, Moanoghar was a haven for hundreds of children victims of the nightmare of conflict.

Mission and vision:

Moanoghar was created with a vision of social commitment and militant action for the poor, especially the poor. Children are the most vulnerable in society. But they also hold in their hands the promise of the future.

The activism and service that Moanoghar represents, rooted in the Buddhist concept of universal love and peace. The philosophy of non-violence is the key to achieving this concept, both between individuals but also between communities and societies.

Moanoghar also aspires to be the image of wealth, diversity, social harmony and peaceful coexistence among people of diverse backgrounds in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. While his ambition is to preserve and develop this rich diversity, he also strives to give this message of tolerance, compassion and mutual understanding to the outside world, which is quite representative of all traditions and heritage of the CHT and its indigenous inhabitants.

Objectives:

The main objective of Moanoghar is:

- to provide shelter, food, clothing, general and vocational education and primary health care for the poor, orphaned and destitute children of the CHT.
- to contribute to the social, religious, educational, cultural and economic development of the indigenous populations of CHTs.
- to undertake public welfare programs and inculcate the idea of universal solidarity and peace in order to bring peace to the world. eliminate illiteracy and launch income generation and employment projects for CHT residents.
- to eliminate the causes of poverty and to offer the population their fair share of the resources of society.
